Pest Control in Port Coquitlam, BC

Start with the garbage. The City’s bear page says Port Coquitlam is home to many black bears, and Solid Waste Bylaw 3900 bans keeping any attractant where wildlife can reach it, with a $500 bylaw notice and no early-payment discount. Carts stay locked except on collection day, when they’re unlocked for pickup from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. and locked again by 7 p.m.; the first City lock is free. Keep at least 100 metres from a bear, and report an aggressive one to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277. Raccoons and skunks at the same bins are a job for wildlife control.

Not the strongest kind. Under s. 81 (5) of B.C.’s Integrated Pest Management Regulation, second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides can only be used at essential service locations, so homes, offices, parks, schools and most shops are out. Older first-generation baits are still sold, but the Province calls them a short-term last resort, and traps remain open to everyone. The City’s Vector Control staff (604.927.7932) also take rodent calls, and our rodent control seals the gaps rats and mice use.

Parts of it are. The CFIA’s regulated area covers parts of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam; its boundary runs along Lincoln Avenue, Oxford Street, Mason Avenue and Wellington Street, and to the east via Fremont Street, Burns Road and Dominion Avenue to the Traboulay PoCo Trail and the Pitt River shoreline. The City was told of the first detection in 2020, and the Province says the beetle was still present in 2025. The 2026 response is one larvicide treatment of turf on public and private land in the treatment zones, and the City treats public land only. Report suspected beetles to the CFIA at 604-292-5742.

It may be European chafer beetle grubs. The City says an infestation usually shows when raccoons, birds and other wildlife dig up a lawn for the grubs, and more than five grubs per test square is its threshold for considering control. Check from January to March; the City’s chafer page recommends nematodes in late July, and the City doesn’t offer chafer treatments itself. We treat chafer infestations: see beetle control.

Our three-visit rodent control program costs $495–$650 + GST for a house and $395–$495 + GST for a condo, and it seals any gap up to toonie size; larger openings are quoted as exclusion work. Where exterior baiting suits the property, it has a $150 + GST minimum setup fee, then costs $78.75–$95 + GST per visit, and needs 30 days’ notice to cancel. Not personally. Fraser Health says landlords can’t legally apply pesticides in their rental suites and must hire a licensed pest control operator, and the Residential Tenancy Branch generally makes the landlord responsible for insect control. The licensee gives the occupant a treatment notice at least 72 hours before using a pesticide in a home.
